Providing safety for vehicles at Glendoe Tunnel

The first large-scale conventional hydro electric station to be built in Scotland for almost 50 years, alongside Loch Ness, at Glendoe, was completed last summer and opened by the Queen. Just two short months later a rock fall blockage was released, unfortunately rendering the plant non-operational. The work needed to repair the tunnel was so extensive that it is not expected for the power plant to be operational before 2011.

Bam Nuttall, who delivers civil engineering projects, has been awarded the contract to repair the Tunnel. The Royal BAM Group is a worldwide construction services company turning over more that %u20AC8billion and listed on the Euronext Amsterdam, and is one of the top three construction and civil engineering businesses in the UK.

During this extensive project, the funding repair project is thought to be £20M, Bam Nuttall needed Fire Systems fitted on their machines involved and they appointed Ardent Fire Protection.

Ardent Fire Protection has already started fitting fire systems on 60-70 machines for working on the tunnel. Tunnelling vehicles often work around the clock in hazardous environments. On these vehicles there are flammable fuels, oils and hydraulic fluids that flow through pressurized lines within centimetres of how turbochargers, manifolds and engine blocks. The risk of fire is high.
